FAQ

Does the electric bike charge whilst I am pedaling? What is an electric bike?

No it does not. The battery is charges like a mobile phone. Plug it in, charge it fully...and you're away!

What is an electric bike?

An electric bicycle, also known as an e-bike, is a bicycle with an integrated electric motor which can be used for propulsion.

Can the battery be used at all times?
It is up to you how often you use the battery, whether it be just for hills or when there is a strong headwind. However the more you use the battery the quicker it will run out.
Is an electric bike like a motor bike - i.e. is it powered by a throttle?
No. All of our electric bikes are pedal assisted. The power only kicks in when you are pedaling (not by twisting a handle). You choose the level of assistance using a control attached to your handlebars.

In some countries, there are some electric bikes that are powered by a throttle but it's worth noting that EU law means most 'self propelled' bikes are classed as motor vehicles and thus need licensing, taxing and insuring to use on public roads.
Is an electric bike heavier than a normal bike?
Yes. They generally weigh 5-7kg more than a normal bike. However, when using the motor the extra weight cannot really be felt.
What is the environmental impact of an electric bike?
E-bikes are completely emission free!
Do I need a licence to ride an electric bike?
No, you don't need a licence to ride an electric bike. All of the electric bikes sold at I Cycle Electric are classed as bicycles - so they can be used on the road the same as any other bicycle.
How fast do electric bikes go?
All electric bikes are governed by law to an assisted speed of 15mph. You, can of course, pedal the bike faster, however you will be using your own pedal power as the assistance will drop off at 15mph.
How do I keep my e-bike clean?

Clean your eBike like you would clean your regular bike. Use a hose, sponge and preferably a decent cleaner.

If you can, then clean it after every ride to keep it in tip top condition. Also remember after cleaning to re apply lubrication to the chain with a decent dry lube.

The electrics on your bike are generally in sealed units - and are weather resistant. Therefore a bit of water whilst cleaning won't do any harm. Be careful not to submerge your bike in water though and allow it to dry thoroughly.

I have seen cheaper electric bikes. What's the difference?
With electric bikes you get what you pay for . We have chosen not to deal with cheaper models as we want our customers to be happy and pedaling for longer!

We only deal with quality machines that we have tried and tested - and are satisfied will perform the task in hand.
How often should an electric bike be serviced?
When you buy one of our bikes, you will be invited to bring your bike in for a 3 month post-purchase service. After this, we recommend servicing every 6 months.
What are my purchase options?
We offer a range of purchase options including:

Outright payment

A variety of Cycle to Work schemes (including the Green Commute Initiative)

Payment by installments

0% finance

Do you offer e-bike repairs?

Yes. We have in-house mechanics who will repair and maintain your bike.

You can bring your electric bike to us for repair/servicing even if you didn't originally purchase it from us.

How do I know which e-bike to purchase?

While you can purchase your bike online, we always advise customers to visit our shop (if possible) to take a range of bikes for a test ride.

We have plenty of outdoor space for you to try out our bikes - and always have a wide range in stock and ready to test.
